Early life
Joe Ajaero was born on 17 December 1964 in Emekuku, Owerri North Local Government Area, Imo State. He grew up witnessing the dignity of labour and the struggles of everyday Nigerians, which shaped his lifelong dedication to workers' rights and social justice.
Educational journey
After obtaining his bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1990), he served with the Nigerian Army in Kaduna during his NYSC (1990–1991). His thirst for knowledge led him to a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism from the Times Journalism Institute (1994) and then a master's degree in Industrial and Labour Relations from the University of Lagos (1998).
In 2003 he earned a Certificate in Advanced Tariff Structuring and Subsidy Design Options from the International Professional Practice Partnership, Cape Town. He further sharpened his leadership skills at St George's Business School (Cambridge), Harvard Business School, the East and South African Management Institute (2011), and the International Training Centre of the ILO in Turin, Italy (2009). Most recently, in 2023, he completed a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) at Baze University, Abuja.
Career highlights
Journalism (1992–2001): Ajaero began his professional career at Vanguard Newspapers as a reporter and correspondent, rising to assistant news editor. His incisive reporting covered labour, politics, and social issues, giving him a front‑row seat to the challenges facing Nigerian workers.
Labour movement (2001–2005): He joined the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) as Head of Training and Information, where he designed capacity‑building programmes and articulated the union's message during the electricity sector reforms.
Nigeria Labour Congress: With decades of experience in labour advocacy, he was elected National President of the NLC in 2023, succeeding Ayuba Wabba. His tenure focuses on inclusive growth, decent wages, and defending the rights of Nigerian workers. In September 2024, he was arrested by the State Security Service after speaking out against fuel price hikes – a testament to his unwavering commitment to speaking truth to power.
